In the wake of Covid-19, the world has almost come to a standstill. With the necessity of maintaining social distance, virtual or online world has replaced our everyday working. Virtual has become the new normal. The need for change has been felt in every other sector, including education- it has become completely online. So the dream that students often had “when will I not have to get up early for school?” has finally come true. Both the teacher and the student have been forced to take up the new change. Initially it was problematic and a bit complicated but eventually, they had to usher in their new classroom. The two most important ways of imparting online education that have emerged are – live trainings and recorded trainings. It will be no surprise if a comparison between the both integral parts of online education is done.
To begin with a small description, online recorded training roughly refers to a procedure of training whereby, a particular session is pre- recorded and is played at a certain period of time. The teachers record the classes and send it across various social media platforms. On the other hand, online live trainings are the classes which take place live, in the sense that both the teacher and students communicate through digital field at the same point of time.
Now coming to the comparison part of it, the main advantage of online recorded classes are that they are a time saver. We have already discussed how both the trainer and the trainee need not meet at the same point of time. So, both of them can use it whenever they feel convenient and comfortable. Not only this, as the video is being recorded, therefore the trainer can make whatever corrections are required and then post it, thus there are rooms for corrections and editing. Above all these, the added advantage that a student gets over the live recordings is that they can watch it over and over again. The major disadvantage is that a teacher finds it very difficult to know whether students are paying complete attention to it and also their attendance is difficult to mark.( mere blue ticks will not guarantee presence of concentration!)
The main advantage of the live training is that the doubts can also be asked and cleared immediately. Other than this it creates a classroom atmosphere even though it is a virtual one. Moreover, there are more than one apps or platforms to provide for an online live class. A very big advantage of live sessions is that it is possible for the teacher to keep a record of the attendance of the students and also to see whether they are paying complete attendance. However, unlike the recorded forms, the live sessions cannot be watched over and over again, neither can it be adjusted according to one’s convenience. Both the teachers and the students have to meet at the decided time, irrespective of their whims and wishes. Also, network is a big issue during live online classes. If the network is not proper, then it will be very difficult to follow up with the classes.
It will be very difficult to pinpoint towards any one form of teaching and say that it is better than the other- both of them are important to teach students. They are very much beneficial to students as they can learn from either of the ways of virtual methods of learning. Virtual learning has become a household name in today’s generation.
Technology is a big boon in today’s world and that is why we are able to continue with the lessons. Technology is the reason why everything continues to be normal even during this crisis and there is not much to worry about. Be it live or recorded, we are able to access our lessons just because of the presence of technology. However, there are many who do not have access to such facilities and when things become digital, it is hard for them to carry on with the classes. We must consider ourselves very blessed that we are being able to access a digital world and that the flow of education does not remain stagnant.
